Failed the Kansas permit test: when you can retake it
Failing the written test is common and fixable. Here is what Kansas says about retaking it, and a plan for the next attempt.
- How soon you can retake
- next working day
- Attempts
- four chances to pass the written test
- Retest fee
- $1.50 re-exam fee
- After repeated failures
- After the fourth failure, wait a minimum of six (6) months from the most recent failed exam
From the official source
If you fail to pass either the written test or driving test you may take again the next working day after paying a $1.50 re-exam fee. You have four chances to pass the written test and four chances to pass the driving test. After the fourth failure of either test, you must wait a minimum of six (6) months from the most recent failed exam before retesting.
Before your next attempt
- Write down the topics you got wrong: signs, right-of-way, speed limits, alcohol rules, distances. The retest usually draws from the same pool.
- Reread only those chapters of the official Kansas handbook, not the whole book.
- Take our Kansas practice tests until you score 90% or more three times in a row — the real pass mark is lower, so that is a safe margin.
- Use the mistake review: it shows only the questions you missed, with the handbook section for each.
- The night before, do one exam simulation and stop. Sleep beats cramming.
The real test: 25 questions, 0 correct to pass.
