Accepted documents and points

Points and conditions come from the official DMV form. Documents marked "Residency" also prove your New York address.

Section A · Social Security (bring one)

Section B · U.S. citizenship

Section B · Lawful status

Section B · Date of birth only

Section C · Proofs of name that also prove New York residency

Section C · Other proofs of name (not residency)

Official rules

  1. You need at least 6 points of proof of name, counting documents from Sections A, B and C together.
  2. You must bring one Social Security item from Section A.
  3. You must bring at least one proof of citizenship, lawful status or date of birth from Section B. Every Section B document also proves your date of birth.
  4. A Standard license or learner permit needs 1 proof of New York residency; Enhanced and REAL ID need 2. Your current address must be pre-printed on it; P.O. boxes are not accepted.
  5. If you have a valid New York State photo document, a W-2, SSA-1099, 1098 or 1099 that shows your full Social Security number can be used instead of the Social Security card.
  6. Bring original documents or copies certified by the agency that issued them.
  7. Expired documents are not accepted unless the form says they are.
  8. Only one document of each type and from each source is accepted: for example, not a bank statement and a credit card statement from the same bank.
  9. Damaged, altered or erased documents are not accepted.

This calculator is an unofficial aid. The DMV decides which documents it accepts at your visit, and the list can change. Check the official form before you go.
