SSN not required for the Standard Driver's License (ITIN or SSN card accepted as documents); REAL ID requires an identification number such as an SSN, verified with SSA.

If your country is not on the list

Holders of a current out-of-country license must take the eye test and the written test; the MVD page exempts only out-of-state (not foreign) license holders from the road test. Non-English documents need a certified English translation.

Persons with a current out-of-country license are required to take the written test. www.mvd.newmexico.gov

Documents for non-citizens

Examples of accepted immigration documents:

  • Passport or passport card from the applicant's country of citizenship
  • Consular identification card (e.g. Mexican consulate)
  • Permanent Resident Card (if verified in SAVE)

License regardless of immigration status

Applicants unable to prove legal status can get a Standard Driver's License (non-REAL ID, not accepted for federal purposes); no fingerprints and no SSN needed. Under SB 278 (2019) driving authorization cards were folded into the non-REAL ID license and are no longer a separate product.

No fingerprints and no social security number are ever needed. realid.mvd.newmexico.gov
