Failed the Oregon permit test: when you can retake it
Failing the written test is common and fixable. Here is what Oregon says about retaking it, and a plan for the next attempt.
- How soon you can retake
- same day possible at a DMV office, depending on resources
- Attempts
- online: four times total, twice in 24 hours
- Retest fee
- test fee paid every time you take a test
- After repeated failures
- After four online attempts you must test at a DMV office
- Online test
- Online: two times in a 24-hour period; four times total; then DMV office
From the official source
If you fail a knowledge test, you may test again the same day, depending on the DMV office testing resource availability. If you fail a knowledge test, you may test two times in a 24-hour period. You may take the test online four times total. After four attempts you must test at a DMV office. Every time you take a test, you must pay the test fee and present proof of identity and date of birth.
Before your next attempt
- Write down the topics you got wrong: signs, right-of-way, speed limits, alcohol rules, distances. The retest usually draws from the same pool.
- Reread only those chapters of the official Oregon handbook, not the whole book.
- Take our Oregon practice tests until you score 90% or more three times in a row — the real pass mark is lower, so that is a safe margin.
- Use the mistake review: it shows only the questions you missed, with the handbook section for each.
- The night before, do one exam simulation and stop. Sleep beats cramming.
The real test: 35 questions, 28 correct to pass.
