Bicycle Crossing

Warning sign · MUTCD W11-1

Bicycle Crossing

Bicyclists may be riding on or crossing the road ahead, for example where a bike path meets the street.

Shape
Diamond
Color
Yellow or fluorescent yellow-green background, black bicycle

What to do

Slow down, look for cyclists in both directions and be ready to yield. Give bicycles at least three feet of space when passing and do not squeeze past them in the same lane. Check your mirror and blind spot before turning right.

Where you see it

Where bike paths or lanes cross or join the roadway, and on roads popular with cyclists.

Test trap

Bicycles have the same rights to the road as cars; the sign does not mean cyclists must get out of your way. A white sign with a bicycle (BIKE LANE or BIKE ROUTE) is regulatory or guide, not a warning.

Memory tip: Yellow bike = watch and share; white bike = a lane or route for bikes.

Practice question

A yellow diamond sign showing a bicycle means:

  1. Bicycles are not allowed
  2. Bike rental ahead
  3. Watch for bicyclists; share the road
  4. Bicycle lane only

Answer: C. Bicyclists may be on or crossing the road ahead.
