Regulatory sign · MUTCD R5-1
Do Not Enter
You may not drive past this sign; traffic beyond it is coming toward you. Entering would put you head-on into oncoming vehicles.
- Shape
- Square with a round symbol
- Color
- White sign, red circle with a white horizontal bar, white letters
What to do
Do not turn into or continue onto the road or ramp. Look for the correct entrance or another route. If you have already passed the sign, pull to the side safely and turn around as soon as it is safe.
Where you see it
At the exit end of one-way streets, at freeway exit ramps and anywhere traffic would otherwise enter against the flow.
Test trap
Do Not Enter is often mixed up with Wrong Way. Do Not Enter stands at the entrance to keep you out; Wrong Way is farther in and tells you that you are already going against traffic.
Memory tip: A red circle with a white bar is a closed door — don't go in.
Practice question
A red circle with a white horizontal bar means:
- Do not enter
- Stop ahead
- No parking
- Road closed to trucks
Answer: A. This is the DO NOT ENTER sign. It is posted where traffic would be going the wrong way, such as the exit end of a one-way street or ramp.
