Warning sign · MUTCD W2-2
Side Road Ahead
A side road enters your road from the side shown, forming a T-shaped junction. Vehicles may turn onto your road or wait to cross it.
- Shape
- Diamond
- Color
- Yellow background, black vertical line with a short line joining from the right (or left)
What to do
Slow down and watch the side road for vehicles about to pull out. Be prepared to brake if someone enters in front of you, and give slow-moving farm vehicles or trucks room to complete their turn.
Where you see it
Before T-junctions on rural or faster roads where a minor road joins from one side.
Test trap
Side Road shows your road continuing straight through with a branch joining; T Intersection shows your road ending. Also, the short branch may be drawn at an angle (Y symbol) for a skewed side road.
Memory tip: A long line with a stub on one side — someone may join you from that side.
Practice question
A yellow diamond sign showing a vertical line with a short line joining from the right means:
- Right lane ends
- Merge right
- Right turn only
- Side road enters from the right ahead
Answer: D. A side road joins from the right; watch for vehicles entering.
