No Right Turn

Regulatory sign · MUTCD R3-1

No Right Turn

Right turns are prohibited at this intersection or driveway.

Shape
Square
Color
White background, black right-turn arrow inside a red circle with a red slash

What to do

Go straight or turn left as allowed, and plan another way to reach your destination. If you are already in the right lane intending to turn, continue ahead safely instead of stopping or swerving.

Where you see it

At intersections where a right turn would send you into a one-way street, pedestrian zone or dangerous conflict.

Test trap

Students sometimes read this as 'no turn on red'. No Right Turn bans the turn at all times, on any signal; No Turn On Red only bans it while the light is red.

Memory tip: Red circle and slash over a right arrow — the right turn is crossed out.

Practice question

A sign showing a right-turn arrow inside a red circle with a slash means:

  1. Right turn only
  2. Right lane ends
  3. Keep right
  4. No right turn

Answer: D. Right turns are not allowed at this location.
