Warning sign · MUTCD W6-2
Divided Highway Ends
The median or barrier that separated the two directions of travel ends ahead. You will soon share one roadway with oncoming traffic.
- Shape
- Diamond
- Color
- Yellow background, two black arrows with a median shape that ends between them
What to do
Move toward the right side of the roadway and stay to the right of the center line. Slow down slightly and watch for oncoming vehicles. Do not pass until you are sure the road ahead is clear.
Where you see it
Shortly before the end of a median on a divided road.
Test trap
Divided Highway Ends and Divided Highway Begins look alike; look at where the median shape is. If the arrows start apart and come together, the division is ending. Also do not confuse it with the plain Two-Way Traffic sign.
Memory tip: The island shrinks away ahead — the barrier is gone, oncoming traffic is next to you.
Practice question
A yellow diamond sign showing two opposing arrows with a divider that ends means:
- Road closed
- Keep right
- Divided highway ends
- No U-turn
Answer: C. The divided highway ends ahead; traffic will soon be in both directions without a median.
