Warning sign · MUTCD W2-4
T Intersection
The road you are on ends ahead at a cross street. You must turn left or right; you cannot continue straight.
- Shape
- Diamond
- Color
- Yellow background, black T symbol
What to do
Slow down well before the end of the road and decide which way you will turn. Yield to traffic on the cross street, which normally has the right-of-way, and stop if a Stop or Yield sign is posted. At night watch for the end of the pavement, which may be marked with a large arrow or object markers.
Where you see it
Before the point where a road ends at another road, especially where the end is not obvious.
Test trap
The T symbol means your road ends — you are the stem of the T, and the cross street is the top. Students often answer 'side road ahead', but on that sign the main line continues past the branch.
Memory tip: You are driving up the stem of the T — the road stops, you must turn.
Practice question

- The road ends ahead; you must turn left or right
- Traffic signal ahead
- Two-way traffic
- Truck route
Answer: A. The road you are on ends at a T intersection; prepare to turn.
