Signal Ahead

Warning sign · MUTCD W3-3

Signal Ahead

A traffic signal is ahead, usually one you cannot see yet because of a hill, curve or high speed.

Shape
Diamond
Color
Yellow background, traffic signal symbol with red, yellow and green lenses

What to do

Reduce speed and get ready to stop; the light may be red when you reach it. Cover the brake and watch for vehicles already stopped ahead. If a yellow beacon on the sign is flashing, the signal is about to turn red.

Where you see it

Before intersections where the signal is hidden or the approach speed is high.

Test trap

The sign itself does not tell you what color the light is; it only warns that a signal exists. Choose 'be prepared to stop', not 'speed up to make the light'.

Memory tip: A picture of a light means a real light is coming — foot off the gas.

Practice question

A yellow diamond sign showing a traffic light means:

  1. Traffic light is broken
  2. Police checkpoint
  3. Traffic signal ahead
  4. Railroad crossing

Answer: C. A traffic signal is ahead. Be ready to stop.
