Pedestrian Crossing

Warning sign · MUTCD W11-2

Pedestrian Crossing

Pedestrians may be crossing the road ahead, often at a marked crosswalk that is not at an intersection.

Shape
Diamond
Color
Yellow or fluorescent yellow-green background, black walking figure

What to do

Slow down and scan both sides of the road, including behind parked cars. Be ready to stop and yield to anyone in or about to enter the crosswalk. Never pass a vehicle that is stopped at a crosswalk — it may be waiting for someone you cannot see.

Where you see it

Before mid-block crosswalks, near parks, shopping areas and transit stops, sometimes with a downward arrow plaque at the crossing itself.

Test trap

The pedestrian sign is a diamond; the school crossing sign with two children is a pentagon. Pedestrians in a crosswalk have the right-of-way, so 'honk and continue' is never the right answer.

Memory tip: One walking figure in a diamond — people, not a school.

Practice question

A yellow diamond sign showing a walking person means:

  1. Watch for pedestrians crossing
  2. Pedestrians must not cross
  3. Sidewalk ends
  4. Hiking trail ahead

Answer: A. Pedestrians may be crossing ahead; slow down and be ready to yield.
