Hill (Steep Downgrade)

Warning sign · MUTCD W8-1

Hill (Steep Downgrade)

A steep downhill grade is ahead. Vehicles can pick up speed quickly and brakes can overheat on a long descent.

Shape
Diamond
Color
Yellow background, black truck on a downward slope

What to do

Slow down before the hill begins and shift to a lower gear so the engine helps hold your speed. Check your brakes and use them in short, firm applications rather than riding them the whole way down. Keep extra distance from trucks, which may be moving slowly.

Where you see it

Before long or steep downgrades, often with a plaque giving the grade percentage or length.

Test trap

The correct test answer is to slow down and use a lower gear, not to shift into neutral or rely on the brakes alone. The truck on the sign does not mean the warning applies only to trucks.

Memory tip: Truck pointing downhill — gear down before you go down.

Practice question

A yellow diamond sign showing a truck on a downward slope means:

  1. Truck stop ahead
  2. Trucks prohibited
  3. Runaway truck ramp
  4. Steep hill ahead — check your speed and brakes

Answer: D. A steep downgrade is ahead. Slow down and be ready to use a lower gear.
