Warning sign · MUTCD W2-1
Crossroad Ahead
Another road crosses yours ahead, forming a four-way intersection. Traffic may enter from the left or right.
- Shape
- Diamond
- Color
- Yellow background, black plus (+) symbol
What to do
Slow down and look left and right for vehicles that may pull out, especially if the cross road is hidden by trees or buildings. Cover the brake and be ready to stop even if you have the right-of-way. Do not pass near the intersection.
Where you see it
Before intersections on rural or higher-speed roads where the cross road is not easy to see.
Test trap
Do not read the plus sign as a hospital or first-aid symbol; a hospital sign is blue with a white H. Crossroad also differs from Side Road, where only one branch joins from one side.
Memory tip: A plus sign is two roads crossing — look both ways.
Practice question
A yellow diamond sign with a black plus (+) shape means:
- Hospital ahead
- Railroad crossing
- Crossroad — another road crosses ahead
- Church zone
Answer: C. Another road crosses the one you are on; watch for cross traffic.
