Yield Ahead

Warning sign · MUTCD W3-2

Yield Ahead

A yield sign is ahead, usually out of sight around a curve or over a hill. You will soon have to give the right-of-way to other traffic.

Shape
Diamond
Color
Yellow background, small red-and-white triangle with a black upward arrow

What to do

Slow down and start checking for traffic on the road you will be joining. Approach the yield sign at a speed that lets you stop if the way is not clear. Be ready to merge smoothly if there is a gap.

Where you see it

In advance of a yield sign that cannot be seen from far enough away, such as before a hidden ramp or roundabout.

Test trap

Like Stop Ahead, this sign only warns; the yielding happens at the triangle sign itself. Do not confuse the small red-and-white triangle with the red octagon of Stop Ahead.

Memory tip: A little yield triangle with an arrow — get ready to give way up ahead.

Practice question

  1. Yield sign ahead
  2. Yield to pedestrians only
  3. Warning: road work
  4. Merge left

Answer: A. A yield sign is ahead; slow down and be ready to yield.
