Warning sign · MUTCD W6-3
Two-Way Traffic
You are leaving a one-way road or divided highway and entering a road where traffic moves in both directions. Oncoming vehicles will be in the lane next to you.
- Shape
- Diamond
- Color
- Yellow background, two black arrows, one up and one down
What to do
Keep to the right of the center line and do not drift across it. Pass only where it is legal and when the oncoming lane is clear for a long way ahead. Expect headlights coming toward you at night.
Where you see it
Where a one-way street or divided highway changes into an undivided two-way road, and periodically along two-way roads.
Test trap
Do not confuse this with Divided Highway Ends, which also shows two arrows but with a median shape between them. Two-Way Traffic simply means oncoming cars share the roadway with you.
Memory tip: Up arrow and down arrow side by side — cars coming at you.
Practice question
A yellow diamond sign with one arrow pointing up and one pointing down means:
- One-way street
- Two-way traffic ahead
- Divided highway
- Lane for passing
Answer: B. You are leaving a one-way road; traffic ahead moves in both directions. Keep right.
