Railroad Crossing Advance Warning

A railroad crossing is ahead. The round shape is reserved for this advance warning sign.

Shape
Round (circle)
Color
Yellow background, black X and letters RR

What to do

Slow down, look both ways and listen for a train. Be prepared to stop at the crossing if lights flash, gates lower or a train is approaching. Never stop on the tracks and never start across unless you can clear them completely.

Where you see it

On the right side of the road a few hundred feet before a railroad crossing, often with a painted X and RR on the pavement.

Test trap

This sign warns that the crossing is ahead; it is not posted at the tracks themselves — the white crossbuck does that. Test questions often ask which sign is round: only this one.

Memory tip: Round like a train wheel — railroad ahead.

Practice question

A round yellow sign with a large X and two letters R means:

  1. Road closed
  2. Right lane ends
  3. Railroad crossing ahead
  4. Rest area ahead

Answer: C. This round sign warns that a railroad crossing is ahead. Slow down, look and listen for trains.
