Advisory Speed Plaque

Warning sign · MUTCD W13-1P

Advisory Speed Plaque

It shows the safe speed for the hazard on the warning sign above it, such as a curve or ramp, in good conditions. It is a recommendation, not the legal speed limit.

Shape
Square or rectangle plaque
Color
Yellow background, black numerals and 'MPH'

What to do

Slow down to the posted speed or lower before you reach the hazard. Go even slower in rain, snow, fog or with a heavy load. Do not wait until you are in the curve to brake.

Where you see it

Mounted directly below a yellow warning sign for a curve, turn, ramp or intersection.

Test trap

Many people treat the number as the speed limit. It is advisory; the legal limit is on the white regulatory sign. Still, if you exceed it and crash, you may be ticketed for driving too fast for conditions.

Memory tip: Yellow plaque under a sign = the safe speed, not the law.

Practice question

A yellow plaque reading '35 MPH' is mounted below a curve warning sign. It means:

  1. The legal maximum speed is 35 mph
  2. The safe speed for the curve is 35 mph
  3. You must drive at least 35 mph
  4. The speed limit ends after the curve

Answer: B. The plaque gives the advisory speed for the hazard above it; it is a recommendation, not the law.
