Warning sign · MUTCD W3-4
Be Prepared to Stop Sign
You may soon have to stop, usually because a traffic signal or other control ahead is about to change or is hard to see. It often works together with a flashing yellow light.
- Shape
- Diamond
- Color
- Yellow background, black 'BE PREPARED TO STOP' text and border
What to do
Take your foot off the gas, check your mirror for following traffic, and be ready to brake. When the flashing light is on, expect the signal ahead to turn red. Do not speed up to beat the change.
Where you see it
Before signals or other controls that drivers may not see in time, such as after a hill or curve or on a high-speed road.
Test trap
This sign does not order you to stop right now. It warns that a stop may be needed, so the correct response is to slow and get ready. Do not confuse it with the Stop Ahead or Signal Ahead sign, which show a symbol instead of words.
Memory tip: Words say it all: slow now, stop soon.
Practice question

- Stop immediately where you are
- Slow down and be ready to stop
- Speed up to pass through quickly
- Pull onto the shoulder and wait
Answer: B. The sign warns that a stop may be needed ahead, so ease off the gas and get ready to brake.
