Regulatory sign · MUTCD R1-5
Yield Here to Pedestrians
You must yield to pedestrians at the crosswalk ahead and stop at the line painted before it. This protects people when a car in one lane hides them from other lanes.
- Shape
- Rectangle (square)
- Color
- White background, black letters and border, with a red-and-white yield triangle
What to do
Stop or slow down at the yield line, let pedestrians cross, and check each lane before you go on. Do not pass a car that has stopped for a pedestrian. Move forward only when the crosswalk is clear.
Where you see it
Before an uncontrolled marked crosswalk on multilane roads, with a yield line painted 20 to 50 feet before the crosswalk.
Test trap
Do not treat it as an optional hint. The test expects you to give way to a person who is in the crosswalk or about to step in, and never to pass a stopped car in front of a crosswalk.
Memory tip: Yield triangle plus people = let walkers go first.
