Warning sign · MUTCD W15-1
Playground Sign
A playground is near the road ahead and children may run into the street. Watch for balls, bikes and kids who do not look for traffic.
- Shape
- Diamond
- Color
- Yellow background, black swing and child symbol and border
What to do
Slow down and stay alert for children near or in the road. Be ready to stop at any moment, and obey any lower speed limit that is posted. Do not pass stopped vehicles or other cars without checking for kids first.
Where you see it
Beside parks, playgrounds and recreation areas that are close to the roadway.
Test trap
Test takers mix it up with the five-sided school sign or the pedestrian crossing sign. The swing symbol means a playground, not a school zone or a marked crosswalk, but the caution is the same: children may be in the road.
Memory tip: Swing on yellow: kids at play, so slow your way.
Practice question
This sign means:
- School zone with a crosswalk
- Park closes at sunset ahead
- Playground area, children nearby
- Pedestrians only on this road
Answer: C. The swing symbol marks a playground area where many children require caution.
