Guide sign · MUTCD E5-1
Exit Sign
This sign shows the exit number and where an exit leaves the highway. Exits are numbered either in order or by the nearest mile marker.
- Shape
- Horizontal rectangle
- Color
- Green background, white letters and border
What to do
If this is your exit, check mirrors, signal early, and move into the exit lane before the ramp begins. Slow down on the ramp, watching for the advisory speed. If you miss the exit, continue to the next one; never stop, back up or turn around on the highway.
Where you see it
On freeways and expressways, above or beside the road before and at each exit, and on the ramp gore.
Test trap
The green color means guidance, not a warning or a regulation. Exit numbers are not the same as the route number or mile markers, and a missed exit must never be fixed by backing up.
Memory tip: Green means guide; know your exit number and signal early.
Practice question
This sign means:
- The exit number where the ramp begins
- The speed limit on the exit ramp
- The distance to the next gas station
- The route number of the highway
Answer: A. A green EXIT sign gives the exit number so you can find your turnoff.
