Regulatory sign · MUTCD R3-7
Right Lane Must Turn Right
Drivers in the right lane must turn right at the next intersection. They may not go straight from that lane.
- Shape
- Rectangle (square)
- Color
- White background, black letters, border and turn arrow
What to do
If you want to go straight, move to another lane before you reach the intersection. If you are already in the right lane, signal and turn right. Do not cut across lanes at the last moment.
Where you see it
Just before an intersection where the right lane is a mandatory turn lane, on the roadside or above the lane.
Test trap
Some drivers think this sign is only advice. It is not: on the test, the right lane under this sign turns right only, unlike a sign that says 'Right Lane Must Turn Right Except Buses', which has an exception.
Memory tip: Arrow turns right? That lane must turn right too.
Practice question
This sign means:
- A right turn is allowed from any lane
- Drivers in the right lane must turn right
- The right lane ends ahead
- The right lane may go straight or turn right
Answer: C. Drivers in the right lane have to turn right; they may not go straight.
