Road Work Ahead

Work zone sign · MUTCD W20-1

Road Work Ahead

Road construction or maintenance work is ahead. Conditions may change suddenly, with workers, machinery and lane changes.

Shape
Orange rectangle (sometimes a diamond)
Color
Orange background, black letters and border

What to do

Slow down, stay alert and be ready to slow down or stop. Watch for workers, equipment and signs directing you into other lanes, and obey posted work zone speed limits.

Where you see it

Placed on the roadside well before the work area begins.

Test trap

Do not wait to slow down until you see the workers; the sign is an early warning. Orange signs mean a temporary condition, so yellow-sign habits (speed, lanes) may not apply.

Memory tip: Orange = temporary work. Slow down before you see anyone.

Practice question

This sign means:

  1. A school zone is ahead
  2. Road work is ahead
  3. The road is closed to all traffic
  4. A detour begins at once

Answer: B. Orange signs warn of temporary road work conditions.
