Warning sign · MUTCD W11-4

Cattle Crossing Sign

Cattle or other livestock may be crossing the road ahead. Animals can appear suddenly on or beside the roadway.

Shape
Diamond
Color
Yellow background, black cow symbol and border

What to do

Slow down and watch both sides of the road. Be ready to stop, and give livestock plenty of room and time to cross. Do not honk or rev your engine, which can frighten the animals.

Where you see it

In farm and ranch country, where cattle are regularly driven across the road or may stray onto it.

Test trap

Test questions may offer 'deer crossing' or 'farm equipment' for the cow symbol; the cow always means livestock. Do not assume you can speed past animals standing at the roadside.

Memory tip: Cow on yellow means slow down, it's a moo-ving hazard.

Practice question

This sign means:

  1. Deer may cross the road
  2. Cattle may be crossing the road
  3. A farm is closed ahead
  4. Slow farm vehicles ahead
