One Lane Road Ahead

Work zone sign · MUTCD W20-4

One Lane Road Ahead

Traffic in both directions must share a single lane ahead, usually because of road work. Vehicles take turns, often under a flagger or a temporary signal.

Shape
Orange rectangle
Color
Orange background, black letters and border

What to do

Slow down and watch for oncoming vehicles or a flagger. Wait for your turn, do not enter the lane until it is clear or you are signaled, and never pass in the work area.

Where you see it

Before a work zone where two-way traffic is reduced to one lane.

Test trap

It is not "lane ends, merge": oncoming traffic also uses this lane. Do not confuse it with the yellow "Lane Ends" sign.

Memory tip: One lane, two directions: wait your turn.
