Fallen Rocks

Warning sign · MUTCD W8-14

Fallen Rocks

Rocks may be lying in the roadway or could fall from a slope above. The sign shows a rocky hillside with rocks coming down.

Shape
Diamond (square turned on its corner)
Color
Yellow background, black symbol and border

What to do

Watch the road surface ahead and be ready to steer around rocks safely. Slow down, keep your eyes on the pavement, and never stop under a rocky slope or swerve into oncoming traffic.

Where you see it

In mountain and hilly areas with rocky cuts or cliffs beside the road.

Test trap

The sign warns mainly of rocks that may already be in the road, not just rocks falling on you. So the best habit is to watch the roadway, not the hill above.

Memory tip: Rocks on the slope, rocks on the road: eyes on the pavement.
