Guide sign · MUTCD D10-1
Mile Marker
This sign shows how many miles you are from the start of the route, usually the state's south or west border. It is a reference location, not a speed limit or distance to a destination.
- Shape
- Vertical rectangle
- Color
- Green background, white letters and border
What to do
Use it to know your location and to estimate the distance to your exit by subtracting numbers. If you have an emergency or breakdown, give the nearest mile marker and direction to the 911 dispatcher or highway patrol.
Where you see it
On the right side of Interstates and other major highways, usually every mile.
Test trap
A mile marker is not a speed limit sign and not the exit number, although some states number exits by mile. Numbers increase going north and east, so a growing number means you are heading away from the south or west border.
Memory tip: Green and numbered: it counts miles from the south or west border.
Practice question
This sign means:
- The speed limit on this highway
- The number of the next exit
- The distance to the nearest town
- Miles from the start of the route
Answer: D. Mile markers show how many miles you are from the south or west border or start of the route.
