Warning sign · MUTCD W1-6
Large Arrow (Sharp Turn)
The road turns sharply or ends in a turn in the direction of the arrow. It marks a sharp curve or a T-intersection where you must turn.
- Shape
- Horizontal rectangle
- Color
- Yellow background, black arrow and border
What to do
Slow down well before the turn and prepare to steer in the direction of the arrow. Stay in your lane and do not enter the curve at the speed you used on the straight road.
Where you see it
Directly facing traffic at the end of a road or on the outside of a sharp curve.
Test trap
The arrow shows the direction the road turns, not a one-way street or a lane you must use. It is not a Do Not Enter sign, and the turn can be sharper than the advisory speed suggests.
Memory tip: Big arrow, hard turn: brake first, steer second.
Practice question
This sign means:
- Traffic must use the lane the arrow points to
- The street ahead is one-way in that direction
- Passing is allowed in the arrow direction
- The road turns sharply in the direction of the arrow
Answer: D. The large arrow marks a sharp turn or the end of the road, with the turn in the arrow's direction.
