Regulatory sign · MUTCD R4-3
Slower Traffic Keep Right
Drivers going slower than the normal speed of traffic must stay in the right lane. The left lane is for passing and faster traffic.
- Shape
- Vertical rectangle
- Color
- White background, black letters, border and arrow
What to do
Move to the right lane if you are driving slower than the traffic around you, and use the left lane only to pass or to prepare for a left turn. Return to the right lane after passing. Do not stay in the left lane while faster cars line up behind you.
Where you see it
On multilane highways and freeways, at the right side of the road or on a median, wherever slow driving is common.
Test trap
The sign does not set a minimum speed or ban the left lane; it asks slower drivers to move over. Do not assume you may stay left because you are going the speed limit: if you hold up traffic, you can be ticketed.
Memory tip: Slow? Keep right. Left is for passing.
Practice question

- The right lane is closed ahead
- All drivers must turn right at the next intersection
