Warning sign · MUTCD W14-1
Dead End
The road ahead does not continue. There is no through route for vehicles.
- Shape
- Diamond (square turned on its corner)
- Color
- Yellow background, black letters and border
What to do
Slow down and look for a place to turn around or choose another route before you reach the end. Do not count on being able to continue, and watch for people or parked cars at the end of the road.
Where you see it
At the start of a road or street that ends without an outlet.
Test trap
It is not the same as a Road Closed or Do Not Enter sign: you may legally drive in, but you must turn around at the end. Test questions also contrast it with a T-intersection sign, where the road continues left and right.
Memory tip: DEAD END: the road stops, so plan your U-turn early.
Practice question

- The road ahead is closed for repairs
- Only local traffic may enter
- The road ahead has no through route
- The road ends at a railroad crossing
Answer: C. Dead End warns that the road does not continue, so there is no way through.
