Turning Vehicles Yield to Pedestrians

Vehicles that turn at this intersection must give way to pedestrians in the crosswalk. This includes drivers turning on a green light or on red after stopping.

Shape

What to do

Before you turn, look for people in or entering the crosswalk and stop to let them finish crossing. Do not honk or edge forward to hurry them. Start your turn only when the crosswalk is clear.

Where you see it

At signalized intersections where the green light and the walk signal show at the same time, facing turning traffic.

Test trap

A green light does not give you the right of way over people crossing. The walk signal gives them priority while you are turning, so you must wait even if you have the green.

Memory tip: Turning? People in the crosswalk go first.
