Service sign · MUTCD D9-7
Gas Sign
This sign shows that a gas (fuel) station is available at the next exit or turn. It is a motorist service sign.
- Shape
- Square
- Color
- Blue background, white letters and border
What to do
If you need fuel, signal early and take the marked exit or turn. Do not wait until the tank is almost empty, because stations can be far apart on rural highways. Never stop on the travel lanes if you run out of fuel.
Where you see it
On highways before an exit or turn, often combined with signs for food, lodging or other services.
Test trap
A blue sign gives information; it does not warn of a hazard or order you to stop. The sign points to the next exit, not to a station right at your position.
Memory tip: Blue is for you: gas ahead at the next exit.
Practice question
This sign means:
- Gas is prohibited ahead
- Gas is sold at the next exit
- A hazardous-material route begins
- Gas stations are closed ahead
Answer: B. A blue GAS sign shows that fuel is available at the exit or turn indicated.
