Soft Shoulder
The edge of the road beside the pavement is soft and may not hold the weight of a vehicle. Wheels that leave the pavement can sink or lose traction.
- Shape
- Diamond (square turned on its corner)
- Color
- Yellow background, black letters and border
What to do
Stay on the pavement and avoid driving or parking on the shoulder. If a wheel drops off the edge, hold the wheel firmly, ease off the gas, do not brake hard or jerk the wheel, and steer back onto the road once the vehicle has slowed.
Where you see it
Along roads where the shoulder is unpaved or has been washed out, often after construction or in wet weather.
Test trap
Never answer that soft shoulder means a rough or slippery road surface. If your wheels drop off the pavement, braking hard or jerking the wheel back is the classic wrong answer.
Memory tip: Soft edge: stay on the hard road.
