Regulatory sign · MUTCD R10-6
Stop Here on Red
This sign shows where you must stop when the traffic light is red. Stop at the line, not in the intersection or crosswalk.
- Shape
- Vertical rectangle
- Color
- White background, black letters and border, with the word RED in red
What to do
When the light is red, stop at the stop line before the crosswalk. If right turn on red is not banned, you may turn right after stopping and checking for traffic and pedestrians. Do not enter the intersection until the light is green.
Where you see it
At signalized intersections, usually on the right side or above the road, where drivers might stop too far forward.
Test trap
It does not ban right turns on red; that is the 'No Turn on Red' sign. It only shows where to stop. Stopping past the line, in the crosswalk, is a violation.
Memory tip: Red light? Stop here, behind the line.
Practice question
This sign means:
- Stop at this point when the light is red
- Stop here only if a stop sign is posted
- Never turn right on red here
- Stop here even when the light is green
Answer: B. The sign shows the place to stop when the traffic light is red.
